Wonderful Information on Seahorse

Seahorses write the fish genus Hippocampus, inside the family Syngnathidae.There are 40 species of seahorses found in world spread over the shallow tropical and temperate  prefer to live in temperate areas such as sea grass beds, mangroves or coral reefs.

Description of seahorses

Seahorses are known for their equine profile and can float vertical and they do not have scales.  They do not have caudal fin, since they are inferior swimmers.  They can be found mainly resting and are lazy bones to even search for their meals.  In order to suck food, they have long snouts and eyes which can proceed independently of each other just like chameleon.  A seahorse generally eats shrimp, miniature fish and plankton and kinds seahorses' food.

Basic Anatomy

The crown of the seahorses is called coronet and is equally as unique and distinctive like a human thumbprint.  The eyes of these seahorse are intriguing as they are not in tandem with each other.  The dimensions of the seahorses can differ from quarter of an inch to a foot or more importantly is based upon the species that they belong to.

You'd be amazed by the fact that seahorses do not boast of any teeth and they swallow their meals as a whole.  They also make a distinctive or a bizarre and a loud snapping sound at the time of eating which can be heard from a distance away easily.  Its jaws are long and hollow.  Seahorses love live meals primarily.  On an average, a young seahorse eats up to 3 thousand brine shrimp a day.
Seahorse lifespan

No one however has a basic idea as to how longer the life span of an average seahorse is and the way they differ from sea animals other than it from the sea.

Sea life is a different one so depending upon different conditions prevailing in the sea, it has been estimated that the seahorses have life span ranging from 3 to 14 years, respectively.

Seahorse reproduction

This fact is going to add up to your understanding that in seahorses, it's the male seahorse which becomes pregnant.

The mating process involves the female inserting her oviduct into the brooding pouch of its male counterpart.

In order to combat exhaustion, she does exactly the process vehemently over event of several times.  In between she resorts to rest; the male seahorse contorts itself to make sure the eggs are being taken by him at the right place inside his brood pouch.

Once this activity is completed with, the male seahorse moves away and attaches itself to a plant nearby.  However, the female moves away to make sure her reduction of oviduct and the oviduct recede usually in several eggs are fertilized in the male's brood pouch.


The male seahorses are pregnant for a slew of weeks and then give birth to their brood pouch.  When they are about to give birth, the brood pouch gets prolonged in spherical dimensions.  They also proceed under several minutes of muscular contortions, a forward and backward bend and then within an explosive action the brood gets detached from your system.  Once after the last youthful seahorse is left in the sea, the male is again ready to re-mate with the female inside a couple of hours from giving their arrival.

Sex Role Reversal

Considering that the male seahorses are the sole channel of seahorse reproduction, much speculations and research has been carried out to yield out matter as to whether or not there are gender role reversal.

Sex reversal role involves the female basically competing for male as a mate.  In the entire reproduction practice, it's the male seahorse that supplies all of the nutrition and prenatal care to the young ones to be frisked out.
